An Eye Exam Can
Catch Glaucoma Early
Not all eye diseases cause symptoms right away. Glaucoma can damage your vision before you’ve noticed any changes to your vision.
When you see us for an eye health exam, or as part of our dry eye evaluations, we’ll screen for glaucoma. By identifying glaucoma in an early stage, we can better manage the disease, preserving as much of your vision as possible for as long as possible.
Book your appointment and see the difference Dr. Neal and her team can make.
What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that affect your optic nerve.
The optic nerve, located at the back of your eye, helps transport the images your eyes collect to your brain, providing you with sight. However, glaucoma can damage the optic nerve over time, potentially leading to permanent vision loss if it isn’t managed.
Glaucoma usually doesn’t present early symptoms during its first stages of development, so we check for signs during each examination. From here, we can provide comprehensive strategies to help manage its progression.
Detecting Glaucoma
Glaucoma is often characterized by high internal eye pressure, also known as intraocular pressure or IOP. As glaucoma progresses, it can affect your peripheral vision and eventually lead to permanent vision loss.
Even if you have no problems with your vision now, your risk of developing glaucoma can increase with age, if you have a family history of the disease, and specific health conditions like diabetes. Our team can detect and track glaucoma by measuring your internal eye pressure and testing your field of vision. To do this, we’ll use trusted imaging techniques like the Goldmann applanation tonometry and the Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer.
Managing Glaucoma
We understand it can be difficult to learn that you or a loved one have glaucoma. Dr. Neal will aim to answer all of your questions about what happens next during your appointment and any follow-ups.
The treatment and management plan depends on the type of glaucoma diagnosed. Treatment may include medicated eye drops, laser treatment, and/or surgery.
